Blog Spotlight - Beginner’s Wax

Beginner’s Wax was created by Grant Dickerson, a newbie in the world of card collecting. His blog is based on the idea of documenting his journey through the ranks of the hobby. It includes product reviews, honest opinions, and off the wall commentary on cards, the MLB, and athletes in general as well as tips for other beginners. A Colorado Rockies fan, Grant is moving back to Florida along with his brother in-law James Foote (creator of Tulo Trader); so expect to see an increase in posts about the Rockies, Rays, Orlando sports and of course, baseball cards. Check it out; we all have to start somewhere. Enjoy!

Blog Spotlight - Sports Cards Uncensored

Sports Cards Uncensored was created to make sure that nothing slipped past the collective goalie when it comes to the hobby. It may not be the best written blog or the most visually appealing, but it does not hold back any opinions (or language) when discussing the issues most collectors deal with on a daily basis. Adam Gellman, the blogger who writes SCU, has been a collector for 20+ years and feels very strongly that many collectors let themselves be taken advantage of. He hopes that with this blog, it wont be as easy for people to destroy what everyone loves so much. Features of the blog include a Youtube channel, first looks at upcoming sets, and of course, discussion about collecting and sports in general.

Blog Spotlight: Bad Wax, Bad Hits

Badwax.net: Mike, the writer of Badwax has been collecting cards since he was 7 years old (1978). What drew him into the world of card collecting was the 1978 Burger King cards of Yankee players. Ever since getting a 1978 Thurmon Munson card, he has been hooked, but mainly it’s been bad pack after bad pack of cards, more specifically what he likes to call Bad Wax. Badwax.net is a blog dedicated to reviewing bad packs of cards, one pack at a time. Currently Mike is doing an Operation Topps campaign, where he is opening up boxes and boxes of bad wax in order to build sets for every year of Topps since 1986. So far it’s been maddening, but oddly fun.

Bad Hits: A second blog that Mike has been running is Badhits. Although this first started out as random bad inserts he has gotten over the years, it has transformed itself into a who’s who of cheap game used and autograph cards. His mantra is that he won’t pay more than $2 for any one card. So far it’s been a mixture of today’s and yesterday’s stars, the site is dedicated to reviewing each and everyone of them. One card per day.

Blog Spotlight: Fleer Sticker Project

The Fleer Sticker Project is dedicated to reviewing and displaying the various Fleer Baseball, Football, and Basketball team logo releases from the early 1960’s through the early 1990’s. I’m covering items like decals, cloth patches, stickers, and quiz cards that were either inserted along with cards, or sold on their own. As I’ve been working on collecting these various sets, I’ve come to find that there is relatively little information on most of these issues, and secondly that for many of these sets there are numerous variations either between different years where the sets appear to be similar, or in some cases variations within the same set. I’m attempting to basically create an on-line checklist with as many pictures as possible of these Fleer issues so that anyone who has any interest in these items can have a better idea of what is available to collect.

Welcome to a blog about….blogs

My name is Mario Alejandro and I run Wax Heaven. In the 5 1/2 months I have been in the card “blogosphere” I have seen the number of baseball card & sports card related blogs jump from under 15 to over 60. I have created this second blog as a way to feature other sport cards bloggers who are just starting out or old timers like the legendary Chris Harris of Stale Gum, who has been writing about sports cards for over a decade!

There will be one blog per week spotlighting a sports cards blog. If you would like to be featured, please send an e-mail with your name, blog URL, and a short paragraph about your blog to Waxheaven@gmail.com. If you’d like, you can send an image you’d like to be used in the feature.

Also, if there is a blog not linked on the main page, please let me know either by e-mail or by leaving a comment.

Thanks,

Mario Alejandro
